Former ADB executive named EMPEA CEO
The Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) has named Robert W. van Zwieten as its president and CEO, following the departure of founding president Sarah Alexander earlier this year. His appointment is effective immediately.
Van Zwieten has spent more than 25 years in financial institutions across US, Europe and Asia. Most recently, he served as director of private sector capital markets at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, overseeing $2.5 billion in emerging markets debt, equity and private equity investments.
He previously held roles in an Asia-focused hedge fund venture, the Singapore Stock Exchange and Lehman Brothers.
"I am delighted Robert is joining EMPEA. He has demonstrated his passion and commitment to EMPEA's mission to develop the asset class globally through his frontline work in the industry. His familiarity with the complexities of investing in emerging markets and adept skills in relationship building will serve EMPEA well as we enter a second decade of offering unique membership value and global private equity intelligence," Jeffrey Leonard, chairman of EMPEA's board of directors, said in a statement.
Alexander left EMPEA in January to take up a position with The Abraaj Group. Jennifer Choi, currently vice president of industry and external affairs, served as interim CEO while the search for a permanent head was conducted.
Based in Washington, EMPEA has approximately 320 members firms globally representing over $1 trillion in assets under management.
