Sarah Alexander, CEO of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA), has agreed to join The Abraaj Group as a managing director. EMPEA’s executive committee has recommended that Jennifer Choi, currently vice president of industry and external affairs, serves as interim CEO while the search for a permanent head is conducted.

At Abraaj, Alexander will provide perspectives to the group's North American stakeholders on global growth markets. She is due to begin her new role in February.

"As the founding CEO of EMPEA [Alexander] has been a globally recognized voice in private equity for nearly a decade and has nurtured the development of the industry in growth markets," Arif Naqvi, founder and CEO of Abraaj, said in a statement. "Her appointment is testament to our strategy of strengthening our relationship and communication with all of our key stakeholders in North America."

Alexander presided over the inception of EMPEA in 2004 and has helped grow the association to more than 300 members representing 60 countries and over $1 trillion in assets under management. She was also instrumental in building out EMPEA's conference and research activities.

Jeffrey Leonard, chairman of the EMPEA board, paid tribute to the role Alexander has played "highlighting the vital role or private equity in emerging economies."

Prior to joining EMPEA, Alexander spent five years at EMP Global where she was responsible for private equity investments in Asia. Earlier in her career, Alexander worked on development finance for the World Bank and served as an advisor on international trade and finance policies to the US Department of State.

Choi is currently responsible for managing EMPEA's member and industry engagement activities, institutional partnerships, global collaboration efforts and external communications. She joined the association as its first research director.
