GLOBIS establishes Singapore subsidiary
GLOBIS, the Japanese venture capital firm, has established Globis Singapore, a subsidiary that will provide companies with management training and organizational development solutions.
Established exactly 20 years after its parent company was founded in 1992, GLOBIS Singapore represents the firm's second overseas base since the launch of GLOBIS China in Shanghai in February.
GLOBIS decided to set up the Singapore subsidiary in response to what it perceives as a growing need to develop local leaders in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, due to Japanese companies increasingly moving their operating bases to Asia.
The new company, which will begin operations in October, will supply corporate training and networking courses to both local employees and the staff of Japanese companies stationed in the region. Classes will mainly be conducted in English, although clients can request services in Japanese.
In addition to developing human resources and organizations through the Graduate School of Management, GLOBIS University, GLOBIS Executive School, GLOBIS Management School, and now through GLOBIS Singapore, GLOBIS provides venture funding through its GLOBIS Capital Partners (GCP) arm.
GCP is currently investing out of its third fund, which closed at JPY18 billion ($225 million) in October 2006. In May, it led a GBP2.3 million ($3.6 million) Series A round of funding for Quipper, a UK quiz applications manufacturer. Benesse, a Japanese education and publishing company, and Atomico, the VC firm led by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, also participated.
