Globis leads $3.6m Series A round for quiz developer
Globis, the Japanese venture capital firm, has led a GBP2.3 million ($3.6 million) Series A round of funding for Quipper, a UK quiz applications manufacturer. Benesse, a Japanese education and publishing company, and Atomico, the VC firm led by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, also participated.
Quipper, which received seed funding from Atomico last year, will use the new capital to expand and improve the quality of its content.
The company was set up in 2010 by Masa Watanabe, who previously co-founded Japanese mobile social gaming developer DeNA. It poses questions to users across 2,000 topics and allows them to create bespoke quiz programs. A total of 85 million questions have been answered on the company's main platform since its launch last October, in languages ranging from Dutch to Turkish. Quipper is seen as a tool for schools and other educational institutions as well as for professional trainers and recreational users.
"Quipper has huge potential to expand its platform globally and bring innovation into educational markets," said Minoru Imano, a partner at Globis. "It is my great honor to be the lead investor of this Series A round, to be able to invest in such a great company and a great entrepreneur, with great co-investors."
Globis is currently investing out of its third fund, which closed at JPY18 billion ($225 million) in October 2006.
