Blackstone's Rob Johnson resurfaces at J.P. Morgan
J.P. Morgan Asset Management has appointed former Blackstone MD Rob Johnson as its head of global business development for China real estate.
According to The Asset, Johnson was responsible for Blackstone's Asian business development while based out of the PE investor's Hong Kong office. He marks one of the latest departures from Blackstone in Greater China. It was announced in September that Ben Jenkins, its Hong Kong-based senior managing director, plans to depart the firm at the end of the year to return to New York, and Shiong Tan, Blackstone managing director also in Hong Kong, is said to be departing the firm.
Johnson will continue to be based in Hong Kong while at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, and will report to Michael O'Brien, the firm's global head of real assets client relations and strategy.
Johnson was previously on Bank of America Merrill Lynch's global real estate principal investments team and its private equity funds group.
Johnson's announced appointment comes weeks after J.P. Morgan Asset Management reportedly won approval from the Beijing government to launch a $1 billion renminbi-denominated fund. That vehicle is said to operate under the Qualified Foreign Limited Partner (QFLP) program, making the US investor the largest ever foreign manager of a renminbi vehicle.
