Blackstone's Ben Jenkins to depart by the end of the year
Ben Jenkins, Hong Kong-based senior managing director at Blackstone Group, will depart the firm at the end of the year to return to New York.
Jenkins has been at Blackstone for 12 years, first in New York before joining the Asia team in 2007. His move to Hong Kong coincided with Blackstone's ramp up of its regional capabilities, and its focus on China. He held the top regional management position until December of last year, when Blackstone elevated Michael Chae, a senior managing director in New York, to head of private equity in Asia, also based in Hong Kong. In that role, Chae manages Blackstone's relationships with limited partners, while Jenkins was to continue managing region-wide transactions.
Unnamed sources told Reuters that Jenkins is making the move to support his wife, who is taking up a senior position at Carnegie Corp.
During his time at Blackstone, Jenkins is credited with leading the firm's investments in Global Tower, Gold Toe-Moretz, and RGIS Inventory Specialists, as well as Blackstone's $600 million investment in China Chemical Corp. subsidiary BlueStar Chemical. Jenkins joined BlueStar's board off the back of that transaction.
Reuters additionally reported that Shiong Tan, Blackstone managing director also in Hong Kong, is departing the firm. The private equity firm has not announced plans to replace either him or Jenkins.
