EIG hires KKR's Rex Chung as co-head of Asia
EIG Global Energy Partners has hired Rex Chung, formerly of KKR, as managing director and co-head of Asia. He will be based in Hong Kong.
Working alongside co-head Yangyang Liu, Chung will be responsible for overseeing investor relations, coordinating co-investment, helping source transactions and developing products for the Asia Pacific region.
According to a statement, the move represents part of a strategic transition for the US-based private investment firm, which wants to leverage increased exposure to one of the energy sector's dominant geographic trends. "With the Asia Pacific region likely to drive global demand for energy for the next several decades, we believe it's imperative to have strong relationships with the leading energy companies and financial players in the region," EIG CEO R. Blair Thomas said.
Chung previously served as head of both the capital markets team and the Asian client and partner group at KKR. Prior to that, he spent 16 years at UBS in the equity and investment banking divisions.
EIG makes energy and energy-related infrastructure investments on a global basis and had $14.7 billion under management at the end of 2015, with about 11% of LP support coming from the Asia-Pacific region. It has made investments in India, Indonesia and Australia.
