Ropes & Gray hires two in Hong Kong
US-based law firm Ropes & Gray has appointed two partners in Hong Kong, and announced plans to double its number of Asia-based partners by the end of 2012.
Julian Chung, 51, joins the Hong Kong office on May 28th, when Ropes & Gray gets its license to practice Hong Kong law, while 36-year-old Gary Li started work at the firm on May 10th. Both lawyers will work on private investment in public equities (PIPE) deals.
"It's a response to a specific request from our clients," Hong Kong-based Partner Marcia Ellis told Bloomberg. "In the area of servicing private equity funds, we're far ahead of the UK firms."
Chung comes to Ropes & Gray from London-based law firm Norton Rose, where he was partner since 2005. Dual-qualified in Hong Kong and England and Wales, his focus is equity capital markets and M&A.
Li, meanwhile, left Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison for his new role, having worked for the New York-headquartered firm since 2001. In 2007 he transferred to Hong Kong, where he was promoted to counsel last year.
Ropes & Gray's attempts to ramp up its Asia offerings come after private equity firms invested $28 billion in mainland Chinese companies in 2011, according to AVCJ Research. Around $9 billion has been invested so far this year.
