Changing of the guard at HarbourVest Partners Asia
Global fund of funds HarbourVest Partners has announced a change in its management team in Asia, with founding Managing Director Philip Bilden (pictured) transitioning to the position of Senior Advisor in 2012. He will remain engaged with senior level relationships with general partners, investors and LP advisory boards in the region. Bilden sits on the board of Archer Capital, Bain Capital Asia, Brait Capital Partners, Castle Harlan Australian Mezzanine Partners (CHAMP), KKR Asia, Olympus Capital, Pacific Equity Partners, TPG Asia, and Unitas Capital.
Bilden's day-to-day duties will be taken over by Sebastiaan van den Berg, who has been promoted to Managing Director. van den Berg joined the firm in 2005 and has been in Asia for more than a decade. Beside van den Berg, HarbourVest's other Asian Managing Director is Tatsuya Kubo, who joined the firm in 2010 and works from the firm's Tokyo office. He focuses on building and enhancing relationships with institutional investors and general partners in Japan.
In addition, the Asia team will be further strengthened through two additional Managing Directors and a Vice President, who are expected to relocate from Boston and London in the third quarter of this year, in addition to two recent regional hires.
Bilden joins a selected group of senior HarbourVest professionals that continue to hold advisory roles in the firm's activities, including former Senior Managing Directors Ed Kane and Kelvin Delbridge. Bilden joined HarbourVest in Boston in 1991 and relocated to Hong Kong in 1996 to establish the firm's Asian offices.
Brooks Zug, Senior Managing Director and Co-founder of HarbourVest, said in a statement, "Philip Bilden has been instrumental in building our Asian franchize over the past two decades. On behalf of our limited partners, he has travelled the globe extensively and worked tirelessly during his 15 years in Hong Kong and 20 years with the firm, leading a team of very capable investment professionals in building portfolios of the highest quality Asia Pacific partnerships over many vintage years. His continued presence as a Senior Advisor to HarbourVest will assure us access to his wisdom and judgment. And, of course, he will remain a close friend of all of his partners for years to come."
Bilden commented, "I have had the great privilege to build a leading franchise in Asia thanks to the efforts of our dedicated Asia team and the vision and early pioneering work of our founding partners. Looking forward, I am committed to helping my partners and colleagues take the franchise to the next level. The firm's commitment to the region and the expansion of our local team will allow HarbourVest to continue building valuable long term relationships and top performing investment portfolios at a time of rapid expansion and growth in the region."
HarbourVest Partners is one of the world's leading independent global alternative investment firms, focusing on investment programs for institutional investors, with more than $30 billion of funds under management.
