Sovereign's Capital leads Series A for Indonesia's BerryKitchen
Indonesian online catering start-up BerryKitchen has raised a $1.25 million Series A round led by Sovereign's Capital, with participation by existing investor East Ventures.
BerryKitchen currently operates in Jakarta, and allows users to order home-cooked food for delivery. The company processes 1,300 orders per day, with customers paying for online credits that they then trade for meals. BerryKitchen also recently introduced a read-to-cook menu that offers fresh ingredients that are delivered for the user to cook themselves.
The funding will be used to expand the company's geographical reach and to grow its delivery capacity, according to Tech in Asia. The company also plans to apply for halal certification.
BerryKitchen was founded in 2012 and raised its first round of institutional investment in March 2014, when the Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia committed $44,000 in seed funding. East Ventures also committed an undisclosed amount a few months later.
The main customers for BerryKitchen's cooked lunch boxes are office workers without time to cook for themselves. Its competitors include Papa Bento, GorryGourmet and BlekrosDiet in the cooked food delivery sector, and Black Garlic in the ready-to-cook category.
Sovereign's Capital, based in the US, seeks early and growth stage investments in emerging markets, usually committing between $250,000 and $2 million. Its previous investments in Indonesia include participating in two separate rounds for Bridestory, and in a Series A investment for Giftcard.co.id.
