
TA Associates invests in Asia-focused telecom firm Aicent
TA Associates has made an undisclosed growth capital investment in data network provider Aicent, which provides services to Asian telecom operators.
TA Associates did not disclose details of its investment, but called the transaction size "significant."
Aicent provides messaging and roaming cross-border and cross-network solutions to operators in 120 countries. It is headquartered in San Jose, California, and has a R&D facility in Beijing. The company works with operators including China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, and claims to have more than 90% operator coverage in Asia.
It additionally touts 100% coverage in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
According to TA Associates, the firm was attracted to Aicent given the potential growth for mobile solutions both in Asia and worldwide. Citing the Cisco Virtual Networking Index, a release on the transaction notes that mobile data traffic is projected to see CAG of 92% between 2010 and 2015, and by 2015, Asia Pacific is expected to account for the largest percentage of monthly mobile data usage.
"The explosive growth in mobile data traffic will undoubtedly require mobile network operators to ramp up capacity," Hythem El-Nazer, principal at TA, said in the release.
Aicent has previously received private equity funding from Intel Capital in 2008.
