Indonesia flight booking service gets Series A round from Samwer brothers
Global Founders Capital (GFC) a VC firm co-founded by Rocket Internet’s Samwer brothers, has made its first Asia investment - committing an undisclosed sum to Indonesian flight search engine Traveloka.
Launched in September 2012, Traveloka started as an airline ticket search engine for mostly domestic flights but now also processes ticket bookings. According to ComScore, Traveloka was the top airfare search site in Indonesia in July (outside of the official airline websites).
Last November it raised seed funding from East Ventures.
The capital will be used to accelerate growth, build up the team, improve existing services, and add new ones, such as hotel and car rental bookings.
The online travel landscape in Indonesia is crowded, with competitors such as Recruit Global Incubation Partners-backed PegiPegi.com, Tiket, and NusaTrip among others.
GFC launched in March and has three partners - Oliver and Marc Samwer, and Fabian Siegel, former co-CEO of Europe's food delivery website Delivery Hero.
The global fund has EUR150 million ($198 million) in capital and is stage-agnostic, with investments anywhere from EUR100,000 to EUR10 million. The ventures it has backed so far include language learning platform Lingoda and online fashion startups GirlMeetsDress and Videdressing.com
