VinaCapital banks on edible birds nests
VinaCapital’s Vietnam Opportunity Fund Limited has paid an undisclosed price for a minority stake in Yen Viet Joint Stock Company, a domestic retailer of edible bird’s nest nutritional products.
According to a statement from the Vietnam-focused fund, "the edible nests of swiftlets are considered a delicacy in many parts of East and Southeast Asia," with consumers in China - and particularly in Hong Kong - using the nests as ingredients for traditional medical remedies. Globally, VinaCapital notes that the market for this product is reached $3.4 billion in 2010, "with supply sufficient to meet only half of demand."
In terms of this market, Yen Viet maintains a focus on affluent clients with high disposable income. It has also differentiated itself through the launch of a bottled bird's nest drink. Through the investment, VinaCapital looks to broaden Yen Viet's distribution channels, bolster its production capability, improve the company's corporate governance and take steps for a potential listing on a Vietnamese or international stock exchange.
