Ratan Tata joins IDG Ventures India as advisor
Ratan Tata - chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, holding company for India conglomerate Tata Group - has joined IDG Ventures India as a senior advisor.
Earlier this year Tata took up a similar role with Singapore-based early-stage investor Jungle Ventures. He is also an active investor on his own account, backing the likes of taxi-booking platform Ola, e-commerce platform Snapdeal, and Chinese smart phone maker Xiaomi.
At IDG, Tata will work with the VC firm and its portfolio entrepreneurs on overall business strategy and strengthening organizational leadership.
"Mr. Tata is an icon when it comes to business leadership in the new age India. His rich experience in building businesses and expanding globally from India is of immense value to our portfolio companies," said Sudhir Sethi, founder and chairman of IDG, in a statement.
IDG Ventures India has been in operation for nine years and has made investments in 50 companies, committing more than INR10 billion ($150 million). It has backed start-ups such as Lenskart, Manthan, NestAway, FirstCry, Yatra and Myntra. The firm also got a stake in Flipkart when the e-commerce player acquired Myntra last year.
