Robin Bell-Jones to lead Permira’s TMT coverage in Asia
Permira has redeployed Robin Bell-Jones from London to Hong Kong as part of efforts to expand the firm’s investment activities across Asia.
Bell-Jones will be the third partner at Permira's Hong Kong office, which is led by Henry Chen and Alex Emery, co-heads of Asia. He will be responsible to lead Permira's technology, media and telecoms (TMT) sector coverage in the region.
Bell-Jones has worked for Permira for over 10 years in both the London and Frankfurt offices and is one of four partners in the TMT team. He has participated in several notable investments, including All3Media, the UK's largest independent TV production company, and ProSiebenSat.1, a European broadcasting group.
TMT is one of Permira's two core investment areas, alongside consumer, leisure and retail. While the company opened an office in Menlo Park four years ago to bolster its North American presence and support its global TMT team, Bell-Jones told AVCJ that it is now a right time for Asia.
"While we have more than 20 sub-sectors in TMT, the scale and complexity has made the market very interesting," he said. "Given the high growth coming from Asia, our further on-the-ground experiences can help uncover more opportunities across the region and we are excited by making this move as a team."
Permira's global TMT team was established in the late 1990s. Working through various funds, the private equity player has invested around EUR6 billion ($7.52 billion) in over 40 private equity investments in more than 15 countries since 1985.
In 2010, Permira backed Asia Broadcast Satellite through its Permira IV fund, a global vehicle that manages around $12.2 billion. The fund has invested about $2 billion in Asia.
Permira is also about to raise its fifth global fund.
