Japan's Globis re-ups in UK educational app developer
Globis Capital Partners, the Japanese venture capital firm, has returned to lead a GBP3.4 million ($5.8 mllion) Series B round for Quipper, a UK company that develops educational mobile applications.
Previous investors Benesse, a Japanese education and publishing company, and Atomico, the VC firm led by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, also participated.
Based in London, Quipper is headed by Masa Watanabe, co-founder of Japanese mobile gaining giant DeNA. The company develops a range of mobile educational software for students and teachers. It also provides a cloud-based platform where users are able to create their own content and assess student performance.
This latest round brings Quipper's total fundraising to over $10 million. Globis last backed in Quipper in 2012, leading a GBP2.3 million round with the same group of investors.
According to a release, the fundraising follows the successful expansion of the company's flagship Quipper School service in Asia. As part of this expansion Quipper has been working with Benesse to develop a large-scale data-driven learning service trial for tablets.
The start-up claims its apps have over 8.5 million downloads across the world, with educational content spanning over 300,000 questions.
This is the second education software start-up to receive Japanese VC funding this year. Last month, CyberAgent Ventures and Infinity Venture Partners invested JPY550 million in Smart Education, a Tokyo-based developer of educational mobile apps for kids.
