CITIC Capital’s Yichen Zhang joins EMPEA board
Yichen Zhang, chairman and CEO of CITIC Capital, has joined the board of directors at the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA). He will also sit on the organization’s Asia Council.
Zhang, who founded CITIC Capital in 2000, having previously worked for other branches of parent company CITIC Group, was chairman of the China Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) until this year. His appointment takes the number of Asia-based representatives on the EMPEA board to five, alongside KKR's Sanjay Nayar, Baring Private Equity Asia's Jean Eric Salata, Clearwater Capital Partners' Rob Petty and Asia Alternatives' Rebecca Xu.
"With Asia playing an increasing role in driving the growth story of emerging markets, a deep understanding of the region and the Chinese market in particular is critical to EMPEA's continued success in delivering actionable intelligence to global investors," Robert W. van Zwieten, president and CEO of EMPEA, said of Zhang's appointment. "We are very fortunate to have such an experienced and dedicated industry leader joining our board of directors and lending his expertise to the organization."
Van Zwieten took up his position earlier this month, having most recently served as director of private sector capital markets at the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Based in Washington, EMPEA has approximately 320 members firms globally representing over $1 trillion in assets under management. The organization's Asia council, now 23-strong, is chaired by David Pierce, a partner at FLAG Squadron Asia.
