VIDEO: PE's top names on the key challenges in Asia
In the lead-up to 24th-annual AVCJ Forum 2011, held in Hong Kong November 7-11, AVCJ TV asks private equity’s top fund managers about the major challenges facing the industry.
Inexperienced fund managers, performance struggles, and managing the inflow of capital into the region remain key issues. Those polled included Markus Ableitinger, director and head of the Asian investment management team at Capital Dynamics, Philip Bilden, founding managing director cum senior advisor at HarbourVest, Jeremy Coller, CEO and CIO of Coller Capital, Mournir Guen, founder and CEO of MVision, and Jean Eric Salata, founding partner and CEO of Baring Private Equity Asia.
These executives, who spoke at AVCJ's 2010 Forum, additionally see valuations on the rise.
"One of the challenges we're facing as well is the amount of capital that's going into the public markets, and that obviously affects the value of public stocks and public markets, which are used as comps for a lot of the transactions that we do," Baring's Salata says. "I think finding value is becoming more difficult, but in order to do it well I think you have to have a larger team, you have to have a bigger platform to scour for deals in various corners of the region in different markets and different types of deals."
Coller adds that continuous regulatory shifts in even Asia's most mature markets have caused headaches for private equity.
"You've got Australia creating taxes now and China making noises of withholding tax, etcetera, and, of course, that will put off a lot of investors going into the market," he says.
Coller, Guen and executives from each of these firms will be speaking at the 24th Annual AVCJ Forum 2011, taking place on the 7 - 10 November 2011 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. For more information on the 2011 AVCJ Forum visit www.avcjforum.com.
