Ex-PEP executive to lead Social Ventures Australia
Rob Koczkar, formerly a managing director at Pacific Equity Partners (PEP), has been appointed CEO of Social Ventures Australia (SVA), a non-profit organization that makes strategic investments designed to generate education and employment opportunities for disadvantaged Australians.
He will assume his new position in October, taking over from Michael Traill, who will become executive director.
Koczkar joined PEP at its inception in 1998 and then rejoined in 2004 having spent three years working for TPG in London. Before entering private equity, he spent seven years with Bain & Company in the US, UK, Singapore and Australia.
"This is a decision I've made based on my desire to make a greater contribution to building a fairer Australia. My involvement with SVA over the past few years has instilled in me a great respect for and confidence in the organization, and reinforced my passion for finding innovative approaches to social challenges," Koczkar said in a statement.
"I believe that SVA's unique approach is a great match for my own background and skills set - so I jumped at the opportunity to take on this new role."
SVA was set up in 2002 by The Benevolent Society, The Smith Family, WorkVentures and AMP Foundation. During its first 10 years, the organization generated A$45 million ($40.7 million) of investment from philanthropists, trust and foundations and government into the social sector. It also worked with 88 social ventures, distributing more than A$20 million to support their work.
The organization operates the A$8.8 million SVCA Social Impact Fund, which was seeded by a A$4 million government grant matched with A$4.8 million from private investors. It provides loans and equity investments to social enterprises.
PEP is currently raising its fifth fund, which is targeting up to A$3.5 million, including A$2 billion of core equity and a further $1-1.5 million earmarked for a discretionary co-investment pool.
