Goodwin strengthens Asia fund formation team
Goodwin has recruited Phil Culhane and Elyn Xing, who previously worked together at Simpson Thacher, as Asia-based partners in its private investment funds practice.
Culhane has more than three decades of experience working on fund formation, notably with alternative asset managers in Asia. He spent 24 years at Simpson Thacher as a partner and latterly as counsel. Culhane departed the firm in 2016.
Xing joins from Debevoise & Plimpton, which she joined in 2017 after leaving Simpson Thacher. She advises sponsors on private funds, co-investment vehicles, and separately managed accounts involving multiple sectors and strategies.
“With their strong collective background and unmatched expertise, Phil and Elyn will work with our existing talented fund formation lawyers to further strengthen our private equity platform at the intersection of capital and innovation and serve clients across the Asia Pacific region,” Yash Rana, chair of Goodwin’s Hong Kong office and leader of the firm’s Asia practice, said in a statement.
Goodwin’s Asia private investment funds activities are led by Hong Kong-based Greg Barclay. The team covers fund formation across a range of asset classes, as well as co-investments and GP-led restructurings and other secondary transactions.
Separately in Asia’s fund formation space, Kirkland & Ellis has promoted Nicholas Liew to partner. He has been with the firm for six years.
