Gobi, AirAsia unit invest $11m in Malaysia's EasyParcel
Gobi Partners has joined Teleport, the cargo and logistics platform of AirAsia, to commit $10.6 million in Series B funding to Malaysia-based e-commerce logistics and parcel delivery service EasyParcel.
Founded in 2014, EasyParcel aims to provide transparent shipping options for small businesses in Southeast Asia, along with individuals selling through online marketplaces. It operates in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand.
Through the company's web portal, customers can compare prices for local couriers and delivery services. EasyParcel positions itself as a service for both shippers and delivery companies, which can use it to access the region's growing e-commerce market without having to invest in relationship-building themselves. It claims to have helped deliver more than 19 million parcels since its launch.
"EasyParcel is uniquely positioned to streamline the customer's full journey by integrating end-to-end logistics services with its partners," said Thomas Tsao, chairman and founding partner of Gobi, in a statement. "This generates operating efficiencies overall and creates synergies for the entire ecosystem, including our existing logistics investments, Deliveree and Zoom."
EasyParcel was initially funded by an investment from US-based Exabytes Group. It raised a Series A round in 2015 from several angel investors as well as Axiata Digital Innovation Fund, an investment vehicle set up by Malaysian telecommunications giant Axiata and Malaysia Venture Capital Management.
Gobi is investing through the Meranti ASEAN Growth Fund, which launched in 2017 with a target of $200 million and reached a first close of $50 million the same year. The vehicle invests in Southeast Asian start-ups in the cloud services, e-commerce, and financial services sectors, primarily in Series B and C rounds.
