Mitsui leads $40m Series B for Singapore's Campana
Mitsui & Co has led a $40 million Series B round for Campana Group as the data network infrastructure company advances the installation of an undersea fiber cable system between Singapore and Myanmar.
The 2,200-kilometer project, known as Sigmar, is planned to be the largest capacity, lowest latency data center corridor between the two countries and will connect with Campana's exiting internet traffic gateway facility near Yangon. Some of the new capital will also be used to grow the company's enterprise and cloud-related services.
"Campana is pleased to support and continue to invest in advancing digitalization capabilities in the ASEAN market and specifically in Myanmar," Myo Ohn, CEO of Campana, said in a statement. "Sigmar's rollout will contribute to stimulating innovation in other critical industries, such as education, healthcare, and finance, and ultimately to Myanmar's overall socio-economic development."
Founded in 2014, Campana provides various cloud, broadband, telecom, and data center services to corporate and mass-market stakeholders across Singapore, Myanmar, and Thailand. The company operates four gateways and some 4,000 kilometers of cable. It is currently arranging a debt facility for an additional $40 million with an unspecified partner.
Data infrastructure in Asia, including fiber cable, is seen as a compelling trend for investors due to the continued growth in demand for greater computing capacity and internet access in remote areas and emerging markets. Data-focused assets are said to benefit from a more flexible and scalable development profile than traditional infrastructure.
