Singapore launches legal tech accelerator
Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is partnering with two state-sponsored academic institutions to launch a start-up accelerator focused on technology related to legal practices.
The Future Law Innovation Programme (FLIP) will receive support from the Singapore Academy of Law and the Singapore Management University. It is being called the first accelerator for legal technology in Southeast Asia.
FLIP is envisioned as a two-year initiative that will bring together lawyers, technology entrepreneurs, investors, academics, and regulators in an attempt to develop new delivery models for legal services. It will include a workshop known as the Legal Innovation Lab to be located adjacent to the Supreme Court, as well as an online collaboration platform called LawNet Community.
Participants will enroll in up to three tracks: a back-end technology program for smaller law firms, a legal innovation program, and a 100-day acceleration program for scaling up businesses. To date, 31 participants from 23 entities have signed up, including the likes of Rajah & Tann and Dentons.
"IMDA believes that every business needs to be a digital business to remain relevant and to seize growth opportunities," Tan Kiat How, CEO of IMDA, said in a statement. "We are encouraged by the legal community's participation in the FLIP programme, which aims to identify key challenges in the legal sector and source for innovative solutions for these pain points."
It follows closely on a partnership between IMDA and the Singapore Exchange (SGX) aimed at helping technology start-ups go public. SGX and IMDA will recruit financial investors to support start-ups via pre-IPO funding rounds and in preparation for listing.
