Japan's Unison buys local bar and restaurant chain
Unison Capital has acquired Dinamix, an operator of Japanese-style bar and restaurants, for an undisclosed sum.
The company operates 105 izakayas – a form of Japanese gastropub that serves small dishes for snacking on while drinking – under approximately 30 brands. Unison said in a statement that the company stands out as a fast-growing, value-for-money option in an izakaya industry that is shrinking due to demographic changes and rising competition.
The private equity firm’s management resources and capital will be used to help Dinamix’s founder accelerate growth. The investment was made through Unison’s fourth Japan-focused fund, which closed in August 2015 at JPY70 billion ($633) million.
Established in 1998, Unison pursues mid-cap buyout opportunities involving succession planning, management buyouts, and corporate carve-outs. Recent activity includes the acquisition of 16 off-patent brand-name drugs – known as long-listed products – from Astellas Pharma by Japan Established Medicines Corporation, a vehicle created by the private equity firm.
