Carlyle promotes SE Asia buyout head Sunil Kaul to partner
The Carlyle Group has promoted Sunil Kaul (pictured), who leads buyout operations in Southeast Asia, from managing director to partner. His is one of 62 senior promotions announced by the firm, of which 15 are Asia-based professionals.
Kaul joined Carlyle from Citibank Japan, where he served as president, in 2008 and was named head of Southeast Asia buyout coverage in October 2015. He served on the boards of Taiwan's Ta Chong Bank and India's IIFL Holdings until last year, following exits from both companies. He remains on the board of PNB Housing Finance, a Carlyle-backed Indian mortgage lender that went public at the end of last year.
The Asia buyout team has also appointed three new managing directors: Nina Zhizhi Gong in Beijing, Alwin Poon in Hong Kong, and Ling Yang in Shanghai. Meanwhile, Le Guan and Ashish Karan, based in Beijing and Mumbai, respectively, have been promoted to principal. Lorin Chen, part of the Asia growth team in Hong Kong, has also become a principal.
In Japan, earlier this year Kazuhiro Yamada was named sole head of buyout coverage when Tamotsu Adachi, his co-head, stepped back to a senior advisor role. One additional promotion has now been announced, with Genta Saito elevated to principal.
The other partner level promotions in Asia are Han Chen, who has been with Carlyle since 2004 and focuses on China real estate opportunities out of Shanghai, and Hong Kong-based Wayne Bannon and Seok-Don Chu, from the legal and investor relations departments, respectively. The remaining four individuals who have been promoted to managing director or principal are in real estate, investor relations and legal and compliance, according to a statement.
