Amit Chandra of Bain Capital
Amit Chandra, Managing Director of Bain Capital India, discusses why India tends to be over-built in its private equity industry and what that means for both short-term and long-term investments.
Chandra admitted that the country is overloaded with funds "for the size of the market," and that the industry faces incontinuties because of that.
"From the size of the private equity market in particular, I think that - while this is a large market - it's largely capital market-oriented ... therefore you cannot use the traditional metrics of what should be private equity's share as a percentage of GDP in this market," he continues. "What I think we have seen is that the industry as a whole has got ahead of the curve and there's been a little bit more focus on India that is potentially deserved, at least from a short- to medium-term perspective."
Chandra additionally advises observers to pay particular attention to the growing culture for consumption in India as that materializes as a key area of opportunity for investments across sectors.
