CANADA PENSION PLAN INVESTMENT BOARD Mark Machin, the pension plan’s CEO and before that its head of Asia, resigns after it emerges that he traveled to the United Arab Emirates in a personal capacity to receive a COVID-19 vaccination at a time when Canadians were not supposed to be going abroad. John Graham is named replacement CEO, while Suyi Kim, the pension plan’s head of Asia Pacific, is named senior managing director and global head of private equity. The Asia leadership role goes to Agus Tandiono, who heads up the fundamental equities team in the region. Machin joins Serendipity Capital, a Singapore-based investor specializing in financial services, as a non-executive director

CDC GROUP Anne Glover, CEO and co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners, and Nikunj Jinsi, formerly global head for venture capital at International Finance Corporation, are appointed to a newly formed VC investment committee that advises on fund commitments and co-investment proposals

HARBOURVEST PARTNERS The fund-of-funds opens an office in Singapore, meaning that Asia accounts for five out of its 11 locations globally. The local team will initially comprise four employees across the investment, investor relations, operations, and regulatory functions. Cicely Sun joins from Allianz Global Investors as a managing director and co-head of the Beijing office with a brief to develop relationships with institutional investors in China. The Hong Kong team is bolstered with the addition of Lydia Hao, formerly a vice president for private equity at Neuberger Berman

HQ CAPITAL Lucian Wu, a managing director, leaves the firm, with responsibility for secondaries coverage switching to Jacob Chiu, another managing director who is also involved in primaries and co-investment

INDONESIA INVESTMENT AUTHORITY Ridha Wirakusumah, CEO of Bank Permata and before that a director for Southeast Asia at KKR, is selected to lead Indonesia's new sovereign wealth fund. Other board members include Deputy CEO Arief Budiman, previously CEO of local financial group Danareksa; CIO Stefanus Ade Hadidjaja, currently Indonesia head at Creador; and CFO Eddy Porwanto, a former Northstar Group executive and CFO of Garuda Indonesia

KOREA INVESTMENT CORPORATION Sungjun Song is appointed head of the sovereign wealth fund’s private equity division

OCIO PARTNERS CAPITAL Emmanuel Pitsilis, formerly a senior partner at McKinsey & Company, joins as a managing director and co-head of Asia Pacific, sharing regional leadership duties with Adam Watson

PATHWAY CAPITAL MANAGEMENT Simon Lau, who has led the Asia fund-of-funds operations since 2012, is promoted to managing director

PORTFOLIO ADVISORS Chris Choi, who is responsible for business development and client services in Asia, is promoted from senior vice president to managing director, while Weibo Xiong becomes a senior vice president

TEMASEK HOLDINGS CEO Ho Ching, who is also the wife of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, steps down from her role as CEO after 17 years. She is succeeded by Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara

YALE David Swensen, head of the university’s endowment who pioneered a new approach to institutional investment management and seeded the likes of Hillhouse Capital, dies aged 67

3ONE4 CAPITAL Anurag Ramdasan is promoted to partner, while Nruthya Madappa becomes a principal, alongside Richard Pinto from portfolio management and finance, Yash Baid of the research team, and Ashwini Thulsaram from the governance and business integrity unit

500 GLOBAL Ee Ling Lim, formerly country lead for Singapore, becomes regional director for Asia Pacific with responsibility for corporate and start-up innovation programs and building relationships with various organizations with interests in venture capital

ADVANTAGE PARTNERS Keiichi Suzuki ends a 30-year career with Mitsubishi Corporation – part of it spent making alternative investments – to lead a newly launched renewables and sustainability strategy

AFFINITY EQUITY PARTNERS Sam Sun, previously a partner at Sequoia Capital, is recruited as a managing director based in Beijing

ANTLER Jiho Kang, co-founder of services marketplace Soomgo, joins as a partner in the newly opened Korea office. This follows the launch of operations in Melbourne, India, and Vietnam

APOLLO GLOBAL MANAGEMENT Matt Michelini becomes Asia head, tasked with overseeing investment and non-investment activities, with Steve Martinez assuming the role of vice-chairman of Asia Pacific, while remaining a senior partner for private equity. Anthony Hermann, Julian Longstaff, and Vid Pulavarti are recruited from Commonwealth Bank of Australia to lead the firm’s regional credit operation. Ian Bell joins from Evercore as the head of institutional client and product solutions for Asia Pacific

ASCENT CAPITAL PARTNERS Stanley Kyaw Khaing, a Myanmar-born intellectual property lawyer, and Yeo Chee Kian, who has 20 years’ experience in financial services, are brought in as managing partners

B CAPITAL GROUP Daisy Cai, previously a partner at SoftBank Vision Fund and Gaocheng Capital, joins as a general partner to lead a newly established China presence. Sheila Patel, formerly Singapore-based chair of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, becomes a vice president focused on high-level investment strategy

THE BLACKSTONE GROUP Amit Dixit, the firm’s India private equity head and co-head of acquisitions for Asia, becomes head of PE for the entire region. Ed Huang is named COO of Asia private equity, while retaining his existing roles as head of Asia acquisitions and head of PE for Greater China and Korea. Ryusuke Shigetomi, formerly vice chairman for global investment banking at Morgan Stanley, is brought in as representative director and chairman of operations in Japan, replacing Katsuyuki Kuki, who transitions to an executive advisor role. Also in Japan, Eiichi Hasegawa, previously an advisor to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, becomes a senior advisor

BROOKFIELD ASSET MANAGEMENT Patrick Boocock, a managing partner and head of investment and asset management activities in Asia, moves to newly listed CapitaLand Investments to serve as CEO of alternative assets. Alex Yang, formerly a senior managing director at The Blackstone Group, joins as head of the China private equity business

THE CARLYLE GROUP Amit Jain, formerly of The Blackstone Group, is recruited as a managing director in Mumbai and co-head of the India investment advisory team. He shares leadership duties with Neeraj Bharadwaj, who has taken on an additional role as co-head of Asia healthcare, a post shared with Ling Yang, the firm’s head of China healthcare

CATHAY CAPITAL Arthur Yeung becomes executive president with responsibility for overseeing global management of the firm, while China-based Siqi Chen and Lijun Ding are made partners. Matthieu van der Elst, formerly CEO of France’s Michelin Ventures, is recruited as the firm’s first chief impact officer

CVC CAPITAL PARTNERS Brett Sutton, formerly of Affinity Equity Partners, joints as Australia chairman with a brief to recruit a local team, nine years after the firm closed its office in the country

DSG CONSUMER PARTNERS Sameer Mehta, most recently head of operating businesses outside of Thailand and M&A for Singha Beer’s international division, is recruited as an investment director and head of Southeast Asia

EAST VENTURES The firm takes over as sole manager of EV Growth, its joint venture with Indonesia’s SMDV and Japan’s YJ Capital. This involves absorbing the EV Growth team and part of the SMDV team, including Roderick Purwana, who becomes a managing partner

EIGHT ROADS Ashish Venkataramani is promoted to partner in India, bringing the firm's partner count across Bangalore and Mumbai to five. He focuses on investments in healthcare

EQT Formal entry to the Japan market comes with the opening of a Tokyo office and a partnership with local GP Japan Industrial Partners. Tetsuro Onitsuka, formerly of Japan Post Investment Corporation (JPIC) and TPG Capital, comes in as Japan private equity head, with Masahiko Kato joining from Mitsubishi Corporation in a parallel infrastructure role. Following the launch of a Sydney office in 2020, Frank Heckes and David Forde, both formerly partners at Archer Capital, become joint heads of Australia and New Zealand private equity. Martin Mok and Tak Wai Chung, partners responsible for Asia mid-market coverage, both leave the firm. Mok reemerges at CVC Capital Partners as a senior managing director based in Hong Kong

GSR VENTURES Yutong Zhang becomes the firm’s first female managing director, having joined in 2012

KKR Joe Bae, who was responsible for establishing the firm’s Asian operation, is named co-CEO alongside Scott Nuttall as co-founders Henry Kravis and George Roberts complete the handover to the next generation. India CEO Sanjay Nayar, relinquishes his leadership responsibilities and transitions to a chairman role, while Terence Lee, a managing director and head of growth-stage technology investments in Southeast Asia, leaves the firm. Mukul Chawla, formerly of Temasek Holdings, is appointed to the newly created position of partner and head of growth equity for Asia Pacific. The move comes as Lucian Schönefelder, who relocated to Asia as head of technology for the region, transitions to an advisory role. Three new partners are appointed in the region: Chris Sun, who focuses on investments in China’s consumer sector; Cathy Cai, who works with the Capstone operations division in Beijing; Brian Dillard, a member of the credit and markets team in Hong Kong; and Hardik Shah, who focuses on infrastructure out of Mumbai. There are also three promotions to managing director, including David Katz, who heads up public policy and affairs in Asia, Keith Kim from the infrastructure team in Seoul, and Mumbai-based Capstone executive Ananya Tripathi. K.V. Kamath, formerly president of New Development Bank and chairman of both ICICI Bank and Infosys, is recruited as an advisor

L CATTERTON Yock Siong “Song” Tee joins from Affinity Equity Partners to head up Southeast Asia, while Anjana Sasidharan is recruited from Sequoia Capital India

LEAPFROG INVESTMENTS The Asia and Africa-focused impact investor recruits Biju Mohandas from the International Finance Corporation as a partner and global co-lead for healthcare

NATIONAL INVESTMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE FUND Paddy Sinha, formerly managing partner of Tata Opportunities Fund, joins as an executive director and CIO for private equity. He will make growth and development stage investments from the firm’s Strategic Opportunities Fund

PAG Koichi Ito, previously of Credit Suisse, and Yoichi Tamagawa, formerly of Marunouchi Capital, become co-heads of the Japan private equity business

PROSUS VENTURES Sachin Bhanot is appointed head of Southeast Asia, having previously covered the region for B Capital Group

QUADRANT PRIVATE EQUITY Justin Ryan, a managing partner responsible for growth strategy, leaves to launch Glow Capital Partners, a consumer-technology investment firm. His partner in the new venture is Kate Morris, founder of Adore Beauty. Simon Pither assumes leadership of the growth strategy, overseen by Marcus Darville, a managing partner

REDPOINT CHINA VENTURES Kyle Liu, who focuses on early-stage enterprise services and cutting-edge technology investments, is promoted to partner

SHAWKWEI & PARTNERS Paul DeMand, who has three decades of operational experience in the automotive, electronics, and precision machining industries, joins as a managing director

SOFTBANK VISION FUND Sumer Juneja, who heads up India investments, and Dennis Chang, a China-focused partner, are promoted to managing partner. US-based Lydia Jett and Vikas Parekh, who leads e-commerce coverage and is a board member of Korea’s Coupang and India’s Flipkart, also becomes a managing partner

XPONENTIA CAPITAL Ajay Relan, one of the pioneers of private equity in India who set up Citigroup Venture Capital International’s local operation before going on to found CX Partners, dies at the age of 67. He established Xponentia in 2018 with P.R. Srinivasan, a former colleague at CVCI, and Devinjit Singh, previously of The Carlyle Group

YUNQI PARTNERS Yu Chen, who specializes in big data, cloud computing, autonomous driving, and robotics investments, is promoted to partner
