
SAIF Partners names former Freecharge CEO as MD
Alok Goel, former CEO for Indian mobile recharge service FreeCharge, has joined private equity firm SAIF Partners as its new managing director.
Goel was previously CEO of bus ticketing website redBus before joining FreeCharge. His new role will be to to look into SAIF's early stage investments.
"He brings a wealth of experience in business strategy, product, marketing, operations as well as P&L management. Having built and scaled successful Internet companies, his experience will be vital to our firm," said Ravi Adusumalli, managing partner with SAIF Partners, in a statement.
Goel was with Freecharge when the company was acquired by Snapdeal in April. The deal is understood to have valued the business at around $450 million. RedBus was acquired by South Africa-based media firm Naspers for $135 million in July 2014.
Alok also worked at Google, where he spent five years working in various roles including product management of Google Display Network. He also headed search and mobile products in India, and served as product manager for search and geo local, India.
Goel's previous angel investor activity included interior decor site Intruo.com and foodtech startup Tapcibo (now rebranded as Dazo).
SAIF Partners provides seed, early, and growth stage capital for emerging companies in India and China, and has $4 billion under management. It began partnering with entrepreneurs in India in 2002 and has backed over 40 companies since. Investments include MakeMyTrip, JustDial, PayTM, BookMyShow and Urbanladder.
