Dream Incubator leads $2m round for Japan mobile video network
Dream Incubator has led a $2 million round of investment for Breaker, a Japanese start-up that distributes mobile video content. Seimer Ventures also took part in the round alongside an number of undisclosed investors.
Breaker - conceived and launched by Designed For Revolution, a digital media venture studio based in Shanghai and Tokyo - produces and distributes content with a focus on entertainment, music, and fashion.
The start-up was co-founded by CEO Alan Swarts, a former executive producer with Viacom and MTV in Japan, alongside Japanese comedian and YouTube blogger Ken Sekine, who is better known as Megwin.
According to Japan's Mobile Content Forum, the country's mobile content market is among the largest in the world and was worth JPY371 billion ($3.5 billion) in 2012. The video content segment accounts for just a fraction of this at around JPY26 billion, compared to the JPY260 billion smart phone games market. However, Breaker expects that to change.
"There is a huge shift to video consumption under way in Asia that has radically altered the landscape for content distribution," said Swarts in a statement. "Our team, with its vast experience and expertise in both established and emerging media, is uniquely qualified to fulfill the surging demand with groundbreaking content.
