INCJ invests $6m in Japan's UniZeo
The Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) has invested JPY600 million ($6 million) in UniZeo, a Japanese company which is focused on commercializing new methods of producing synthetic zeolite.
Zeolite is a microporous mineral which has various commercial and industrial applications as an absorbent. Among other things, it used in water purification, as a catalyst in the petro-chemical industry, as a cement additive in the construction industry and in the production of laundry detergent. It also has other medical and agricultural uses.
UniZeo was set up in April this year by Nippon Chemical Industrial to further develop and commercialize a patented low-cost method of producing synthetic zeolite, developed through a joint research project with University of Tokyo.
According to a release, INCJ's injection of capital will be used for further research and deveopment.
Synthetic zeolite has several advatanges over naturally occurring zeolite as it can be manufactured in a uniform state and made to have desirable structures which are not found in nature. However, the process can be expensive.
INCJ is a public-private partnership launched in 2009 with the remit of promoting business innovation in the Japan. It has JPY2 trillion of capital under management.
