China’s Fangda poaches Freshfields partner to lead HK office
Chinese law firm Fangda Partners has hired Freshfields litigation partner Peter Yuen to head up its new office in Hong Kong, which is set to open in June. This will be the firm's first location outside of mainland China.
Yuen joined Freshfields in 1996 and has been a partner in Hong Kong since 2007. He focuses on commercial disputes, regulatory, corporate compliance, banking, IP and professional negligence litigation. He will head up Fangda's new operation.
The Chinese legal firm, which is well-known for advising on private equity investment, cross-border transactions and M&A, has 37 partners and 160 lawyers across three offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. It will be the 14th Chinese firm to set up an office in Hong Kong.
The move comes a few days after Beijing-headquartered Zhong Lun poached Carl Cheng from Freshfields in Shanghai.
In the last couple of years, a growing number of international partners have joined Chinese firms. Recent movers include Rupert Li, who left Clifford Chance to become international managing partner at King & Wood, and Warren Hua, who joined Jun He from Gide's M&A and project finance practice in Beijing.
