Kingsoft receives $50m from Morningside, GGV, Shunwei
Kingsoft Office Software, an office suite that competes with Microsoft Office, has received $50 million in commitments from Morningside Technologies, GGV Capital and Shunwei China Internet Fund.
The office solutions provider, which recently opened its North American headquarters in Palo Alto, will use the capital to expand its global partnerships with major original equipment manufacturers, software developers and service providers in the US, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, according to a statement.
Morningside and GGV will join Kingsoft's board to help develop this strategy.
"With an estimated 2 billion mobile devices to be shipped in 2014, we see an incredible opportunity to continue growing our consumer base as well as our global partnerships," said Ke Ge, CEO of Kingsoft Office.
The company's office suite, which currently has over 100 million registered users, includes a free mobile office app for Android-operated devices. The software is also available for other platforms, including iOS, Linux and Windows.
Jun Lei, founder of Shunwei, was formerly CEO of Kingsoft, where he dedicated himself to developing a word processing system to challenge Microsoft's mid-1990s offering. The effort failed and Lei started a new career as an angel investor. In this capacity, he founded smart phone manufacturer Xiaomi.
