Taiwan’s MediaTek commits $10m to new Walden Riverwood fund
Gaintech, a unit of Taiwanese fabless semiconductor producer MediaTek, has committed $10 million to the latest fund launched by early-stage tech venture capital firm Walden Riverwood Ventures.
According to a filing, the fund - called WRV II - is seeking to raise $325 million. US-based Walden Riverwood Ventures was formed by Lip-Bu Tan and Michael Marks, founders of Walden International and Riverwood Capital.
Tan established Walden International in 1987. The firm specializes in cross-border and early-stage technology investments. He is also a president and CEO of Cadence Design Systems. Marks is a founding partner of US-based Riverwood Capital, a PE firm that invests in high growth technology companies globally. Prior to that, Marks was a partner and senior advisor at KKR.
The two firms previously co-invested on three deals: Ambarella, Aptina Imaging and GoPro.
Three months ago, MediaTek launched a $300 million venture fund that will invest in global start-ups. The fund is managed by the newly-established MediaTek Ventures, which will target semiconductor system and devices, internet infrastructure, services and internet-of-things.
