Indian game developer Moonfrog raises Series A round
Indian mobile gaming start-up Moonfrog has raised $15 million in a Series A round of funding led by Tiger Global and existing investor Sequoia Capital.
Moonfrog was founded in 2013 by a group of former Zynga developers. Its most popular product is the card game Teen Patti Gold, one of the five highest-grossing apps in India. The company also offers Bingo Club.
Its games are designed to use small amounts of battery power and mobile bandwidth, so that customers can play them even on low-end phones and in areas with unreliable internet connections.
Moonfrog will use the new capital to grow its team and expand its offerings beyond card and bingo games into the action and roleplaying genres. The company also plans to improve its back-end support and data analytics systems and build a new multiplayer platform.
Sequoia Capital has experience investing in Indian game developers. It provided a $15 million Series A round last year to Octro, which adapts popular traditional games to mobile phone platforms; the firm also committed $1 million in seed capital to Moonfrog. Tiger Global, for its part, has funded several now-prominent Indian start-ups, including taxi booking platform Ola and online marketplace Flipkart.
