Actor Hugh Jackman invests in L Capital-owned RM Williams
Australian actor Hugh Jackman has invested in bootmaker R.M. Williams, alongside majority shareholder L Capital Asia.
The private equity firm - which is sponsored by luxury group LVMH - acquired a 49.9% stake in R.M. Williams in 2013 for around A$52 million. Last year, it exercised an option to buy the remaining 50.1%, with IFM Investors coming in as a minority investor.
R.M. Williams provided clothing for the movie "Australia," which was released in 2008 and starred Jackman. "It is the strong view of the company that with the support of its shareholders there is a unique opportunity to take R.M. Williams and the iconic Adelaide-made boots, to a global customer," the company said in a statement.
Founded in 1932, R.M. Williams manufactures high quality footwear, clothing and leather goods, and is best known for its leather boots. It operates approximately 55 stores in Australia and its products are distributed in 500 multi-brand retail locations in Australia and 200 worldwide.
L Capital invested in the company via its first regional fund. The firm is currently investing Fund II, which completed a first close in August 2013 at the hard cap of $950 million, with the final close - and the GP commitment - coming several months later.
