GCA to invest $200m in India
San Francisco-based private equity firm Gerken Capital Associates (GCA) has announced that it intends to begin investing in the Indian market with an initial commitment of $200 million.
Alok Gupta, who joined GCA from Axis Private Equity this week, told The Times of India that despite the competition in India, those with local presence and a disciplined approach can generate superior returns.
Gupta has been appointed senior advisor and managing director for Greater India of GCA's EMF VII private equity fund of funds.
"India has a great tradition of entrepreneurship and its demographic profile, large middle-class and increasing internet penetration are some of the drivers helping its growth," he said.
Gupta founded Axis Private Equity in 2006 and became CEO of the firm. He was previously chairman and CEO of a two million ton integrated steel plant in Europe, and a director of Global Steel, the holding company of the Mittal family-owned Ispat Group.
His main investment experience is in the areas of infrastructure, telecoms and technology.
