Taiwan’s 91App raises $9m from AppWorks, CID
91App, a Taiwan-based start-up that helps e-commerce companies set up mobile apps, has secured a Series A round of funding worth $9 million led by local incubator AppWorks.
The CID Group and the start-up's parent company 99 Capital also participated alongside two domestic e-commerce entrepreneurs - Jan Hung-Tze, founder of PCHome, and Paul Lin, chairman of Chunghwa Telecom's e-commerce subsidiary Sennao International.
91App was founded in 2012 by Steven Ho, who previously set up auction site Ubid.com and Monday.com, which were acquired by eBay and Yahoo, respectively. The company provides customized services to merchants to launch their own mobile apps and mobile websites. It has over 1,000 clients in Taiwan, Ho told a press conference, including Family Mart and Studio A, Apple's authorized reseller. 99App expects to acquire more than 3,000 clients this year.
The new capital will be used to grow the company's presence in Taiwan and expand into the Southeast Asian market.
AppWorks announced last week that it had raised NT$1.5 billion ($50 million) for a new fund to support domestic internet start-ups. The vehicle, AppWorks Fund II, received commitments from a number of Taiwanese corporations and financial institutions.
