Matrix leads $5m Series A for Hong Kong's Klook
Matrix Partners has led a $5 million Series A round of funding for Klook, a Hong Kong-based online travel start-up.
China Growth Capital and Francis Leung, Asia chairman and managing partner of CVC Capital Partners, also participated. The round comes just five months after the company raised a $1.5 million seed round from Xiaoguang Wu, a senior adviser at Tencent Holdings.
Klook has also brought in two new strategic advisors - Wilfred Fan, managing director of Agoda, and Shuren Hu, former vice chairman of the planning and financial department at the China National Tourism Administration.
Founded in September 2014, Klook allows users to book tours and other travel activities at discounted prices. The platform now includes more than 1,200 activities across 24 destinations in Asia, up from 1,000 earlier this year, Eric Gnock Fah, co-founder of Klook, told TechCrunch.
The company claims to have grown its online user base from 200,000 to 500,000 over the same period. Greater China and Southeast Asia each account for one third of the user base.
The new investment will be used to add new destinations and activities to the Klook platform, as well as develop its technology. Part of the capital will also go towards marketing and opening an office in Singapore to increase the company's focus on Southeast Asia.
