Softbank Ventures Korea invests $1.4m in KnowRE
Softbank Ventures Korea (SBVK), the venture capital unit of Japan's Softbank Corporation, has invested $1.4 million in KnowRe, an education technology company specializing in adaptive online learning services.
KnowRe, which was established by a group of math instructors, provides game-based software for learning mathematics that adapts the curriculum in real-time as it tracks students' progress. The company is a member of the first class of SparkLabs, a startup accelerator supporting Korean entrepreneurs looking to grow outside Korea.
This funding will be used by KnowRe to expand its business into the US and to continue developing its content and technology. The company plans to launch an open beta service in the US during the first quarter of 2013.
The financing comes shortly after KnowRe was awarded the grand prize at Global K-Startup, a competition for Korean startups run by Google in partnership with the Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Internet & Security Agency.
"We were impressed by the team's passion for education, prowess in technology and the latent possibilities in the digital math education market," said Sean Lee, a director with SBVK, in a statement. "We look forward to helping cultivate KnowRe into a digital math service for students around the world."
SBVK, which was set-up in 2000, has formed more than 10 funds and has invested around $274 million across 130 startup companies. Last week SBVK took part in a $3 million Series B funding round for Korean couples' social media application Between.
