Australia's HighPoint Capital invests in Brand New Media
HighPoint Capital has acquired a significant minority shareholding in Brand New Media (BNM), a Sydney-headquartered business that runs digital channels for brands and broadcasters. Its partners include Seven West Media in Australia, New Zealand’s national broadcaster TVNZ and the Singapore government.
BNM has 80 staff worldwide with studios in Australia, Singapore, the US and Europe. It creates advertiser-funded digital channels and manages downstream t-commerce, gaming, e-learning and community management.
The company has doubled its revenues year-on-year since 2010 and is now approaching A$45 million ($42.3 million) per annum. Earnings have seen compound annual growth in excess of 30%.
BNM was founded by Perry Smith, who now serves as CEO. He and his team will remain in place post-investment. Two HighPoint representatives, including Managing Director Steven Furman, will join the company's board alongside Smith and Frank Brown, formerly of Asia Pacific Viacom, MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures.
"There are some very exciting growth opportunities that lie ahead for BNM, both in Australia and Asia, with their fast-growing Singapore office," Furman said in a statement. "We look forward to working with Perry and his team in capitalizing on these opportunities, as the business enters its next phase of growth."
HighPoint is a private equity firm backed by a group of high net worth families looking to make growth capital investments. Its approach is to partner with the CEOs and management of portfolio companies. Investment targets are likely to have sustainable operating cash flow, EBITDA of A$2.5-10 million, an enterprise value of up to A$60 million, a three-year trading history and a clear competitive advantage.
Equity checks typically fall into the A$4-12 million range, although larger amounts can be deployed with support from co-investment partners.
