Innovation Works’ Kai-Fu Lee diagnosed with cancer
Kai-Fu Lee, founder and CEO of Innovation Works and former head of Google Greater China, has been diagnosed with lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
"A lot of friends concern after reading the news. My health condition is relatively stable now. I start exercising, walking at least one hour every day. I spent more time to read. I have reduced my workload and slept more. Sometimes I will read posts on the Weibo," Lee wrote in his latest post about the illness on Sina Weibo, a Chinese micro-blogging platform.
Taiwan-born Lee first mentioned in a Weibo post last Thursday that he had been hit with the disease. He later revealed that he had lymphoma.
Lee has been involved in the technology and internet industry in the US and China for the past two decades. He worked for Apple, SGI, and Microsoft before joining Google in 2005 to lead the company's China operations.
Lee told AVCJ's China Summit two years ago that he saw 15 people leave Google, where he served as China head, to start their own firms. He decided that he could support such entrepreneurs.
Innovation Works, which launched in September 2009, operates under an incubation-plus-investment model.
The incubator identifies companies or individuals with potential and gets them started. Those deemed to have sufficient potential receive early-stage backing from the Innovation Works Development Fund and venture capital firms are brought in as the companies gather momentum.
