Korean start-up accelerator appoints new GPs
Korean start-up accelerator SparkLabs has appointed Jay McCarthy and Awy Julianto as general partners. They are managing partner and general partner, respectively, at Singapore-based boutique M&A and financial advisory firm Pacific Advisors.
McCarthy has worked on deals across a variety of sectors, principally mining and energy, technology and property. Julianto specializes in technology, media and telecom and consumer products, most recently advising on institutional funding rounds for Chinese e-commerce site 360Buy and listings portal Ganji.
SparkLabs has also added Ray Ozzie, co-founder and CEO of mobile start-up Talko and former chief software architect at Microsoft, and Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University and chairman of In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture capital arm, to its honorary advisory board.
Operating along similar lines to the Y-Combinator and TechStars model, SparkLabs was launched earlier this year to support start-ups in the Internet, online gaming, mobile, ecommerce and digital media sectors. It runs three-month-long mentorship-driven programs and provides funding, office space, a structure program and access to a top-tier network of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors and executives.
Advisors and mentors to the program include US tech entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Vint Cerf, Google's chief internet evangelist.
