Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan posts 14.3% rate of return
Canada’s largest single profession pension plan, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), announced that it had earned its largest value-add dollar amount ever in 2010, claiming C$13.3 billion ($13.9 billion) in investment income by the year’s end, representing a 14.3% rate of return.
This return is C$4 billion ($4.17 billion) above its 9.8% benchmark. OTPP's private equity unit, Teachers' Private Capital, was a standout contributor to this result. At year end, its total assets were valued at some C$12 billion ($12.5 billion), compared to C$10 billion ($10.4 billion) a year earlier. It returned 19% or C$1.1 billion ($1.15 billion) over its 7.1% benchmark, according to OTPP's annual report. And over four years, these assets generated a 2.6% compound annual return, again outperforming the four year benchmark of 1.2%.
