Wind Point Partners buys Korean lens manufacturer
Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners has acquired Daemyung Optical, South Korea’s second-largest manufacturer of optical lenses. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The PE firm sees the purchase as a means of broadening the product range and market penetration of another of its portfolio companies, US-based Vision Ease. Daemyung will also have the opportunity to enter the North and South American markets that Vision Ease serves.
Daemyung was founded in 1985 and specializes in producing cast high-index lenses. Vision Ease, which was bought by Wind Point last year, manufacturers branded ophthalmic lenses, including clear, photochromic and polarized lenses in polycarbonate, hard resin, glass and high-index materials. They are sold through independent and retail eye care locations worldwide.
"Daemyung Optical is a smart investment because it's an established leader with a complementary product portfolio and an extensive distribution network," said Nathan Brown, managing director at Wind Point, in a statement. "We look forward to continuing to grow Vision Ease's business and capabilities through strategic acquisitions and the addition of new markets, and providing long-term leadership for Daemyung."
Wind Point targets middle market buyouts and manages approximately $2.5 billion in committed capital.
