Google launches incubation program in Hong Kong
Google has partnered with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to launch a one-year incubation program to help students and young entrepreneurs in Hong Kong build their own businesses.
An incubation and mentorship program - which was announced at the "Connecting with the World" event at CUHK on Monday - will look to give entrepreneurs access to mentors that can often be hard to reach in Hong Kong.
The programe will also include efforts to help entrepreneurs overcome the costs associated with start-ups and the isolation that comes with high rents and a fragmented entrepreneurship community. There will also be a sponsored trip for outstanding participants to Google's US headquarters to meet and connect with experts in the global community.
"Hong Kong has been one of history's most successful incubators for entrepreneurs. Our goal with this program will be to help sustain and enhance that culture, enabling the next generation of digital innovators in Hong Kong," said Eric Schmidt, Google's executive Chairman.
There have been efforts by a number of groups looking to tout Hong Kong as a start-up hub in the special administrative region including InvestHK, the Hong Kong government agency responsible for promoting foreign direct investment. There is little deal flow to show for these efforts so far however the city has witnessesed a proliferation of co-working spaces which has gone some way to tackle concerns over the expense of real estate.
