In a significant departure from the private equity model, US-based megafund The Carlyle Group is part of a consortium starting up a Chinese shipping company that will capitalize on the “desire among Chinese [SOEs] to control the ships that transport their goods around the world,” according to a statement by industry veteran Gerry Wang.
