Hong Kong's Nest forms accelerator with Nissan
Infiniti, the luxury car unit of Japanese automaker Nissan, has teamed up with Hong Kong-based incubator Nest to launch a platform that will support start-ups developing smart city solutions.
According to a release, the Infiniti Accelerator consists of a 12-week program. Up to eight start-ups will be selected via an application process which ends on August 15. In addition to capital, the start-ups chosen will receive mentorship from specialists in smart cities, hardware, manufacturing, transportation, and technology. Each will get to pitch for funding at a demo day at the end of the program.
"Infiniti is at the forefront of technologies, such as connectivity, autonomous driving, and new energy vehicles, that provide solutions for the future of urban mobility," said Infiniti President Roland Krueger, in a statement. "By working with Nest and innovative start-up companies, we are looking to collaborate further with urban developers on smart city ideas that can improve people's quality of life in a sustainable way."
Nest has two other corporate incubator platforms. The first is a financial technology platform set up alongside DBS Bank, and the second a partnership with life insurance company AIA Group to back start-ups with technologies relevant to the insurance and healthcare industries.
All three are part of Nest's newly-established Branded Accelerators program led by Peter Dingle, formerly of Intel Corporation. It involves Nest customizing accelerator programs for different multinational corporations. They are run as joint ventures with the aim is of allowing start-ups to utilize resources, mentorship and advisory services from outside organizations, while giving corporates access to innovation.
