
Gobi backs China travel site Yododo
Gobi Partners has committed $4 million in Series A financing to Yododo.com, a Chinese hostel booking and travel site.
Set up in 2006, Yododo.com claims to be China's largest Chinese independent travel community with over 6 million active users. The site allows users to discuss and share travel itineraries and experiences, make recommendations, find travel companions and post photos.
It launched its travel booking platform in 2008, with the aim of a being a one-stop service for travellers. The business intends to use this injection of captial to expand the website's hostel network and product offerings.
"As independent travel becomes more popular within China, the non-traditional accommodation segment will become more widely accepted," said Don Jiang, a partner at Gobi. "Yododo has grown with this new market opportunity, and with Gobi's support, we believe that its future upside potential will be huge."
Gobi focuses on investments in early-stage, technology, media and telecom and IT sectors in China. It has five funds under management - two US dollar funds, two renminbi funds, and one Singapore dollar fund - and maintains offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
The firm's other notable investments in the space include Tuniu, Camera360, World Traveller, CSDN, and Madhouse.
