Sequoia commits $20m to Indian gene researcher MedGenome
Sequoia Capital has committed $20 million in Series B funding to Indian genomic diagnostic and research service provider MedGenome.
The money will be used to expand the company's genetic test repertoire, enhance its facilities in the US and India, and add to its research and scientific teams, according to a statement. MedGenome's research deals with a variety of conditions, including cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and other inherited disorders.
The company also partners with other genetic testing services, such as US-based Natera, whose Panorama Non-Invasive Prenatal Test for genetic conditions in unborn fetuses has just been introduced in India by MedGenome.
With this round, Sequoia's Abhay Pandey will join MedGenome's board. The board already includes Sam Santosh of Emerge Ventures, which led MedGenome's $4 million Series A round in June 2014.
Sequoia's previous activities in India's healthcare sector include supporting online doctor search portal developer Practo Technologies through a $4.6 million Series A round in 2012 and a $30 million Series B round, with Matrix Partners, earlier this year.
It is also a backer of pathology services provider Suburban Diagnostic and specialty eye hospital chain ASG.
