Actis invests in Chinese medical equipment manufacturer
Actis has entered China’s healthcare space by purchasing a significant minority stake in Nanjing Micro-Tech, a manufacturer of specialist medical equipment used in hospitals and surgeries.
Founded in 2000, the company claims to be the largest local player in China's endoscopy consumable sector and has a network of approximately 120 distributors, with a strong presence in Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang and Shandong.
The global endoscopy consumable sector was worth $4.4 billion in 2011 and is expected to reach $7.6 billion in 2017. Actis will support Micro-Tech's expansion and augment its management team with international expertise.
"Nanjing Micro-Tech is the number one domestic player in the Chinese endoscopy consumable market; it has built up a loyal following of doctors thanks to the consistently high quality of its products, the reach of its distribution base and its record of innovation," said Meng Ann Lim, head of China and Southeast Asia at Actis. "We see great potential in the Chinese healthcare sector."
Actis has been active in healthcare investments across Asia over the last few years. India's leading generic pharmaceutical company Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and private hospital chain Sterling Add-Life are among its portfolio companies.
In October, the emerging markets-focused private equity player also invested $32 million for approximately 30% of Asiri Hospital Holdings, Sri Lanka's largest private hospital group.
